Abstract

  A partir de la revisión de las memorias del Congreso de 1895 de la Real Sociedad de Geografía británica, este artículo tiene como objetivo realizar un análisis de las justificaciones científicas que llevaron a los británicos a viajes
de reconocimiento de la Antártida (1895-1912). El propósito es mostrar cómo los discursos geográficos funcionaron como explicación para la apropiación simbólica y discursiva de este territorio. Se muestran las características
fundamentales del imperialismo, para resaltar la importancia de la construcción de la idea de imperio a través de los discursos científicos de la RSG, en relación con la expansión hacia el polo sur. Así, se mostrará cómo la ciencia funcionó como un vehículo para la construcción de esta idea.
