The Dictatorships of Chile and Uruguay: between "odious comparisons" and “family resemblances” (1973-1990)

This article examines how Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship followed and interpreted the political process experienced by the Uruguayan dictatorship beginning in 1973. It will argue that there was greater cooperation between the two regimes than usually acknowledged. Beyond Plan Condor and official visits, the Chilean official press followed with particular interest the development of a regime they perceived as very similar to Chile's. Its achievements and failures were reflected in the dictatorship's ideological bias, and an attempt to draw important lessons for Chile from this experience was made. This will be studied by reviewing the contemporary press and academic bibliography.
