The "Celebratable Migrant”: Public Festivity and Thresholds of Recognition in Contemporary Chile (2015–2025)

This article analyzes celebrations organized by Peruvian and Colombian communities in Chile as a setting where public recognition of migrant difference is negotiated. Based on ethnographic research conducted in the cities of Santiago and Antofagasta, it argues that migrant celebrations function as a device of cultural governance. It allows visibility, while imposing thresholds of acceptability. Within this framework, the figure of the “celebratory migrant” emerges, valued when they offer festive repertoires compatible with an unchallenged national narrative. Thus, the relationship between the state and the festive device makes the celebration operational and durable.
