An analysis of the beginnings of the Atlantic Civilization must include consideration of the role of Africa, due to its technological, economic, political, and cultural influence. This work deals with the European overseas expansion, through navigation and exploration, between the Saharan coasts and the Gulf of Guinea, due to its political and technological homogeneity and the availability of relevant sources. The study focuses on the companies of Enrique el Navegante and Alfonso V and refers to their voyages prior to the African circumnavigation and the technical changes that these entailed. The sources used are mainly travel accounts, especially the Crónica de Guinea and Esmeraldo de Situ Orbis.
